Bryson Loses a Finger-Almost

We went camping to our ward campout and while only there 2 hours, Bryson and Keith were playing in the river, cleaning it out from all the logs and rocks, so they could play some more, when the two of them decided they could lift this massive rock together. Well Bryson lifted just enough to get his fingers underneath then dropped the rock right on top of his middle finger (left hand) pinning it on top of another rock. He panicked and pulled his finger out. Although he actually left the tip of his finger under the rock. When he pulled his had out he looked at it and went into a little shock. He stared at it not comprehending what just happened and didn't feel it because the water was so cold his hand has numb. Keith had to tell him to get his butt out of the river. He ran to the caretakers cabin. They gave him a rag to hold his finger in place. Meanwhile I had to run down to the corner market, having just run literally into a pollen patch and my allergies went crazy. By the time I got back Bryson was in hysterics and Keith was in a panic. As soon as I pulled up they jumped in and rushed down to the market where they met a paramedic who stopped most of the bleeding and helped to stabilize him enough to get to the hospital. Keith gave Bryson a blessing which immediately calmed him and made the pain almost nonexistent. They then went to McKay Dee Hospital and got right in they took x-rays and re-bandaged it and waited for a doctor. The doctor took one look and said, "you'll need a hand specialist" We have one available Monday morning! (Since it was Friday and his finger was flapping, we decided that was completely unacceptable-duh) They said we could go to Primary Children's Hospital where they would have a hand specialist waiting for him. They pumped an antibiotic in him through and IV and gave him pain meds then Keith and Bryson left. They got to Primary Childrens around 6pm. They waited in the waiting room till 11:30pm when they were finally taken to a room to wait for the doctor. They couldn't call in a hand specialist until their ER doctor determined it was necessary so they waited 1 more hour. The doctor finally came in and took a good long look of about 2 seconds, and said yep, you need a hand specialist. Can you believe the knowledge and skill these doctors have, I myself am amazed! They waited another hour for the specialist to come. He applied all the stitches he could to the hamburger that was left of the tip of his finger which was basically a flap of skin that covered the broken bone of his middle finger. x-rays showed he lost a chunk of bone and quite a chunk of flesh from his finger. They were worried they might have to amputate it, but realized upon seeing the x-ray that they would stitch it the best they could, wait a week then decide if the stitching would work or if they do need to amputate. Either way Bryson and Keith joked about it and were singing songs in the ER that goes something like this "I have five little fingers on one little hand and four on the other I don't understand..." yea they are hilarious aren't they? Whatever got them through! While they were there Me and the other kids were stranded at camp with a tent but no sleeping bags, clothes etc. It was a fun night for us too only being able to talk to Keith on a borrowed cell phone (since mine was in the car) Finding out details as they came. Thankfully a couple in our ward had a trailer full of sleeping bags for their kids that are all grown and out of the house. So we used them. Keith and Bryson came back up around 4:30am slept for 2 hours and got up for breakfast. Bryson waited till everyone was done eating (thankfully) till he whipped out my cell phone, which housed all the cool pictures Keith took of his finger while they were waiting. I would post them but they are pretty gruesome, and I would hate to be the cause of people throwing up all over their computers! Anyway, the finger is stitched, it still looks awful but at least he still has a finger-kind of. Well another of Bryson's clutsy moments that we can look back on with baffled expression and wonder how in the world did this child become so accident prone? Only Heaven knows that mystery, anyway there's the update in a nutshell.

Thank you for NOT posting pictures. Just the images running through my head were enough to make me queezy. If this is what life is like with a boy, I need a stronger stomach. I am glad that all is going well, keep us updated. Thank goodness for priesthood blessings. Bryson's guardian angel must keep very busy.
